Symposium “New Gifts” is an exhibition showcasing the work of contemporary artists who push digital and emerging technologies beyond their functional capacity into the realm of the metaphor. Featured artists work at the intersection of the arts, sciences, and humanities; and employ technology as a catalyst for artistic expression, storytelling, or cultural exchange. Like Froebel’s Gifts, which were fundamental to the creation of Kindergarten, The Creative Technologies Exhibition puts on display how artists have expanded their material reach beyond traditional materials, thereby creating “New Gifts” for art studios and classrooms. The exhibition accompanies the implementation of a curricular expansion within the Art and Art Education Program. The “Creative Technologies Concentration” (CTC) offers a graduate-level certificate in Art & Art Education at Teachers College. It explores the integration of a broad range of materials and technologies in diverse educational settings. The exhibition will run in tandem with the Creative Technologies Symposium 2015, which takes place on June 19 from 1 pm - 6 pm. “New Gifts” will be on display at Macy Gallery, Teachers College, Columbia University, from June 1 - 26, 2015, Mon - Fri, 10 am - 6 pm. A Public Reception is planned for June 19, 2015, 5 - 7 pm. A dance performance at 5:30 pm interacting with one of the installations will be part of the reception.
